History

Daily Draw: The Hierophant.

There is history here both embodied in the person of the teacher and objectified in the amber around his neck - a substance filled with all the knowledge of the past. He teaches ancient knowledge in understandable bites and leads his students to weave that knowledge into their own experiences, histories, beliefs so they create their own wisdom. This history lesson got me thinking that higher education was not always what it is now, it was once different and it could be different again. I miss my old professors, every teacher needs a teacher.

    1. You've got me sussed :D There is so much to love about this hierophant - his age, wisdom, gentleness, the twinkle in his eye. I have had a few teachers like him and am grateful for the memories...

  2. I miss teachers who are still open to learning, who don't think they have it all figured out. Brings them down to earth rather than put on a pedestal. This is such a beautiful deck. :)

    1. I agree. So much of what goes by the name of teaching is actually violence - I am right and you are wrong. The disturbing thing is that many students seem to prefer this to a less hierarchical more dialogic approach. Perhaps it makes them feel safe?

This is a lovely deck. I've had it a while since seeing it on Ellen's blog just starting to connect with it now :)

    2. I think it is easier to take information in and regurgitate it on command than to use it to think originally and out of the box.

  3. I've not seen any cards from this deck before, lovely teacher. They try to stuff too much crap into school days here. Trying I suppose to give something to the kids who don't like learning. Too much money is devoted to it (sports)While teachers buy or beg classroom supplies. Preschool: Backpack
    Lunchbag
    Number 2 Pencils
    Handheld pencil sharpener
    Eraser
    5 inch blunt tip scissors
    Glue stick
    4 ounces glue
    Tape
    Crayons
    Crayon sharpener
    Colored pencils
    Watercolor paint
    Folders
    Tissue
    Antibacterial hand sanitizer

  4. That is quite a backpack! The gamification of education is pervasive here too. Our latest buzzword 'edutainment' Such a pity gimmicky technology is favoured over enriching creative activities...back to financials again I suppose...

  5. I like that "every teacher needs a teacher" when we quit learning, doing, exploring, experiencing - game over.
When I was wee gal and going to school, we did not have backpacks and no antibacterial hand sanitizer.
