Daily Draw: The Wild Unknown Tarot, The Hermit
Last summer I had a reading at the wonderful Spiritual Connections in Whitby. When the hermit came up as the card signifying me my reader looked a little apologetic and said 'This doesn't mean that you're a loner or strange...' My response 'I'm fine with being a hermit and if people think that's odd I'm ok with that too'
At that point the whole energy of the reading changed. His face lit up, we both relaxed and he began to share with me his fascinating research on hermits through history.
Susan Cain writes that one third to a half of us are introverts and yet we are conditioned by society to think the extrovert is the ideal.
My experience in Whitby reminds me of the importance of not living in camouflage. Sharing our own light of truth we invite others to share theirs.
Here is the magic of the nine which always returns to itself.
..some animals naturally carry shelter everywhere they go, and...some humans are just the same.

One of my favorite hermit cards ever. Can you be a social introvert? :D I like being around small groups of people and in one-on-one conversations, but I always have to come home and recharge soon thereafter. It wears me out otherwise.
ReplyDeleteIndeed you can. You've actually described perfectly what Susan Cain defines as an introvert. There's nothing antisocial about it just an alternative way of being social. She calls the recharge a 'restorative niche' we need so we can go back out and be social again :)
DeleteI love this deck - just been looking through some of your posts with it which are wonderful!

ReplyDeleteI recently had a client label me as a 'Social Introvert' back in January or December and the label fits. I am a Hermit and I am okay with that label as well. I rescue any turtles that I can, trying to keep them from being mashed on the roadways when they move around in the Spring and then back to home turfs in the Fall.
DeleteIt was such a relief to me when I realised I didn't have to live my life in drag as a pseudoextravert. Good work with those turtles 🐢 🐢 🐢
Deletewas the reader Steven Bright? I've never found a reader around here, but it sure would be interesting to hear someone else mine the cards.
ReplyDeleteA guy called Barry (a pagan and a witch) so probably a very different approach to Steven Bright. You're right though it is quite unusual to find a male reader. I think Barry became a reader following his mother and grandmother before.
DeleteI am Ellen and I am a Hermit! I am very proud to be one, although when I was younger it made me feel awkward sometimes. teh pressure of society can sometimes become suffocating.
ReplyDeleteThis is one of may favorite Hermit cards too.
Haha! Isn't it great to be 'out of the closet'. Hurrah for Hermits!
